Will radiant barriers cause roof shingles to deteriorate?
Testing done by the Florida Solar Energy Center has shown that roof shingle temperatures do increase between 5 and 10°F when radiant barriers are installed under the roof deck. the color of asphalt shingles has more of an effect on shingle temperature than the presence of a radiant barrier. No shingle manufacturer limits their warranty when combined with a radiant barrier in the roof system.

What is the R-value of radiant barrier?
This question is often asked and is an indication that there is still some confusion between radiant barriers and reflective insulation. Radiant barriers are always installed with the reflective, (low emittance), surface facing an open air space. Because of a radiant barriers low emittance and high reflectance, it can block about 90-97% of the radiant heat that strikes the surface, significantly reducing the heat transfer in and out of a building. Testing from all laboratories are conclusive, there are no R-values that can be assigned to any radiant barrier- "one cannot assign a unique R-value to any Radiant Barrier".

Has Super Attic Shield been tested by a qualified independent laboratory or government agency?
The Florida Solar Energy Center at Cape Canaveral has tested Super Attic Shield in both small scale laboratory and full scale building models. Their results indicate that Super Attic Shield provides significant resistance to heat transfer. Current tests conducted by the Tennessee Valley Authority, Oak Ridge Laboratories in Tennessee, and the University of Mississippi support these findings. Northeastern Illinois University conducted winter tests in residential structures using infra-red thermograph photography. The photo's showed significant resistance top heat transfer over regular insulation. Back to the top
